Red Epilogue w Videos

I’m back at home now and thinking about the trip to first Port Townsend and then Red Resort. I really had a great trip, but I guess one of the main things I’m recalling from it in telling stories is that winter travel is really not for the faint of heart. There were bumpy plane rides, windy bridge crossings, snowy and icy roads in two wheel drive rental cars. I could go on, but it really sounds worse than it was. All points were reached safely and without any real incidents, and the return trip was easy. And on top of that, the featured opportunities I visited were both really nice residences in rreally amazing locations. I could get used to this I think :)

Here’s some more video from the base of Red….

More on Rossland and Red

Well, I’m on my way home now but thought I’d write a little more about Red Resort and Rossland. For those of you who do not know where it is, Red Resort is located just above the Town of Rossland in south-central British Colombia. For U.S. travellers the typical way to get there is to fly into Spokane, WA, and then take the 2.5 hour drive north. Once you get to Canada it is only 10 miles or so more…

Rossland’s main claim to fame, other that Red and the athletes it has produced, is that it was once part of Canada’s gold rush. The resort features two distinct peaks called Red Mountain and Granite Mountain. Gold was discovered right on the face of Red, so the entire mountain is on top of mining tunnnels. It was an incredibly producive mine, so the Town reflects a past that was more booming than the present.

With that said, the present is still pretty good :)....the following is a re-print from the resort’s site.

Canada’s mountainous Southwest region is steeped in classic alpine skiing and 19th century gold-rush history. More recently, pick-axes and shovels have been replaced by skis, fly rods and mountain bikes, and the Kootenay region has become a natural playground for adventure seekers from around the world. Easy access from major cities combined with favourable weather patterns and heavy snowfall, have transformed the region around Rossland, BC into a year-round destination for adventurers of all levels.

In the heart of this region lies what many consider to be the ultimate adventure-seeker’s hometown, Rossland, British Columbia. The early residents of Rossland earned a reputation for hard work and an appreciation for the wilderness playground that surrounded them. The community of neighbours who call Rossland home today share the same adventurous spirit and desire to live an authentic outdoor mountain lifestyle as those early settlers.

Red Mountain Resort lies right up the road and is known to insiders as a ski and snowboard paradise and was recently rated in the top 10 elite resorts in North America by Forbes Traveller. Rossland, BC has quickly emerged as a four season outdoor paradise offering the locals and lucky visitors access to high altitude mountaineering, mountain biking, golf and fishing in addition to world-renowned lift-accessed backcountry terrain.

Red Mountain Resort offers access to amazing ski and snowboard terrain, high altitude hiking, mountain biking and climbing, as well as custom backcountry tours via snowmobile. Living at Red Mountain Resort means having the ultimate outdoor playground at your disposal. Fly Fishing on the mighty Columbia River for wild rainbows. Helicopter-accessed backcountry skiing adventure, complete with mountain yurt living quarters. Mountain biking through untamed forests on hidden trails high above the small town of Rossland, BC. Kayaking the glacier-fed, wild rivers through evergreen forests, complete with wildlife spectators of all shapes and sizes. This is the lifestyle you can share at Red Mountain Resort near Rossland, British Columbia.

Skiing at RED Many people keep coming back to Red Mountain Resort year after year after they experience the soul at Red for the first time. The deep powder snow, the atmosphere, the terrain, the lack of crowds, and the spirit of the town are why they keep coming back, sometimes to live in Rossland. Red Mountain Resort has two lift-served mountains, Red and Granite. Granite offers 360-degree skiing from its peak due to it being a long-dormant volcano, and is covered by its namesake, granite. The glades on Red Mountain are world class, because the trees are ideally spaced at a distance of 20 or more feet in certain spots of the mountains, and each of the fall lines off the top of Granite pass old growth forests.

Come to Red if You Like to Shred

The developers here are transforming this sleepy resort into a world class destination. They have me staying in their brand new condo building at the ski area base—a mere snowball’s throw away from the ski lifts. The condos are really nice. Continue reading…
