More on Rossland and Red
Well, I’m on my way home now but thought I’d write a little more about Red Resort and Rossland. For those of you who do not know where it is, Red Resort is located just above the Town of Rossland in south-central British Colombia. For U.S. travellers the typical way to get there is to fly into Spokane, WA, and then take the 2.5 hour drive north. Once you get to Canada it is only 10 miles or so more…
Rossland’s main claim to fame, other that Red and the athletes it has produced, is that it was once part of Canada’s gold rush. The resort features two distinct peaks called Red Mountain and Granite Mountain. Gold was discovered right on the face of Red, so the entire mountain is on top of mining tunnnels. It was an incredibly producive mine, so the Town reflects a past that was more booming than the present.
With that said, the present is still pretty good :)....the following is a re-print from the resort’s site.Canada’s mountainous Southwest region is steeped in classic alpine skiing and 19th century gold-rush history. More recently, pick-axes and shovels have been replaced by skis, fly rods and mountain bikes, and the Kootenay region has become a natural playground for adventure seekers from around the world. Easy access from major cities combined with favourable weather patterns and heavy snowfall, have transformed the region around Rossland, BC into a year-round destination for adventurers of all levels.

Skiing at RED Many people keep coming back to Red Mountain Resort year after year after they experience the soul at Red for the first time. The deep powder snow, the atmosphere, the terrain, the lack of crowds, and the spirit of the town are why they keep coming back, sometimes to live in Rossland. Red Mountain Resort has two lift-served mountains, Red and Granite. Granite offers 360-degree skiing from its peak due to it being a long-dormant volcano, and is covered by its namesake, granite. The glades on Red Mountain are world class, because the trees are ideally spaced at a distance of 20 or more feet in certain spots of the mountains, and each of the fall lines off the top of Granite pass old growth forests.
